Project 366: March

True to form, I am way late to my own party. I pretty much only remembered two things I did in March, so it was nice to have a reminder as I was putting this mosaic together.

Assembling this also reminded me that the weather was pretty awesome in March. Lots of walking through the city and eating with sunlight spilling through the windows. My favorite picture of the month was hard to single out, but here we go:

I had only been to London one other time, when I was fourteen or fifteen. It was when Karma Police and Bittersweet Symphony were on MTV, and all I wanted to do was visit this store since I had read that Metallica liked to buy their jewelry there. Of course I couldn't afford anything, nor did any teenager have any business owning jewelry that expensive – most of their pieces are 100% sterling silver and hand crafted on site. Fifteen years later, I found myself back in London and with an hour free; turns out my hotel was a 12 minute walk from The Great Frog. Well, my patience paid off. Some March highlights: Went to Cleveland. Walked around SoHo for hours a few times. Celebrated the 100th birthday of Oreo in its birthplace (Chelsea Piers, the old Nabisco Factory). Had my first boba tea of the season. Went to London for just over a day. Congratulated an old professor at a Hall of Fame ceremony. Bought some art. And ended the month with delicious, tummy warming tacos while it rained outside.

As I'm deep in making-things mode and my brain is hurting a little: Sometimes it's nice to look at stuff and not be so thinky all the time.







Looks like September had a definite color palette. Bring it, Fall.

More on Looking Up

Hope everyone had a great weekend, guys. There was a heat wave in New York and everybody wilted, but there were always payoffs – iced coffee, the Mr. Softee truck, a highly air conditioned FAO Schwartz and the shade in Central & Madison Square Parks.

On to my point: Inspired by my last entry, I have created a Flickr pool called On Looking Up, for all of those top halfs that people pass by without noticing every day.

Photojojo Time Capsule

I've been using the Photojojo Photo Time Capsule for a few months and am really liking it.



Once you sign up and link to your Flickr account, you get an email twice a month showing you an assortment of pictures you took that week, a year ago. Look at how simple it is:



A few hours ago, I was reminded that this time last year I was reading too far into things I saw around the city:



There are other neat little features like being able to share your Time Capsule on Twitter and writing a message to yourself that will be included in your Time Capsule the following year.



I like how simple this tool is, and how excited it makes me each time I get an email from them. I read my journal from "this day last year" every day, just to see what I was up to... the Photo Time Capsule plays into the type of nostalgia you get when you stumble upon something from an earlier time in your life even stronger than reading text, I think. Give this a shot, it's free too.

I just realized that I posted my thousandth photo on Flickr a couple of weeks ago. It was taken at Fada in Williamsburg, during a delicious brunch with my roommate. It's a cute French place that has an amazing menu and a Django Jam session on Wednesday nights, which we have been amusedly curious about. My caption ("looks almost exactly like World Cup"), visually explained:


Isn't that crazy? It looks like the same place, only slightly remodeled. World Cup is one of the many coffee shops in Richmond, Virginia that I would sit in last summer, spending hours trying to get this job.

Anyway, my point: At around Christmastime, Clay very generously bought me a pro account on Flickr, with the hunch that I would use it a lot more if I didn't have a bandwidth limit. He was right, and I am still grateful. Thank you, Clay! Here is to a thousand more.

This time of year, more than most, reminds me of how generous people can be. Sure, random acts of kindness throughout the year are prevalent, but something about this time makes people feel a little more generous, I think. This is nothing new, of course: people tip more, smile more (for the most part), laugh more with each other (or maybe that was just at our long long Christmas lunch last night), etc.

Yesterday, we did Secret Santa here. The theme was "The Knight Before Christmas," probably because of our battle against the medieval marketing model. Well, Neal got me, and knowing that I dressed up as Noodle for Halloween, bought me the Noodle doll from Kid Robot. To stay in theme, he dressed her up in armor and gave her a sword and shield to match her guitar. I was positively tickled.

Then I get home, cloudy and fuzzy from our long Christmas lunch, and have an email from Flickr saying that Clay bought me a pro account. WOW! I have been wanting a pro account for quite some time, but kept putting off for when I had more disposable income. I am so so touched. What a generous and thoughtful thing to do. He said "you carry that camera around all the time, so I figure you must be using it, and you don't post pictures on Flickr that much, so...I connected the dots." Very, very nice. I am so thankful. And just a few days ago I was thinking about how I am posting fewer photos on my server and more on Flickr. Web 2.0 and the heightened level of sharing has certainly gotten to me.

So, thank you to Neal and Clay for making my Monday (and week /season) wonderful.
